2015年4月25日にM7.8 、
また人々が復興に向けて歩み出そうとしていた翌月、
5月12日には再びM7.3の大地震がネパールで発生しました。
この地震によって、約8,900人もの尊い命が奪われ、
約50万戸が全壊、27万戸が半壊という甚大な被害が出ました。
首都のカトマンズや、震源地近くの村落部での被害は甚大で、
地震から発生した雪崩が村を覆いかぶさってしまった村もあります。
首都のカトマンズから北西約100キロ（直線距離だと40キロ）に位置する
ヌワコット郡は約1,070人もの尊い命が奪われ、
約58,000戸が全壊、約15,000戸が半壊という大きな被害を受けた郡の一つです。
ヌワコット郡のサムンドラデヴィ村6区は、
Sano Tino Life Designのもう一人、僕の生まれ故郷です。
特に震源地が近かった5月12日のＭ7.3の余震は、
このサムンドラデヴィ村6区の家屋を全滅させてしまいました。

僕はネパールでの地震発生当時、自らの仕事の関係で日本からアメリカの西海岸の町、
サンディエゴに出張で滞在していました。普段は時差を気にして、
絶対に夜中にはかかって来ないはずのネパールの父からの電話が真夜中に鳴り、
僕は目を覚ましました。「村のみんなの家があっという間に瓦礫の山に変わってしまった…
村の子供たちの中に瓦礫の下敷きになってしまった子たちがいる。
沢山の怪我人が空き地で手当てされている…」普段は心配をかけまいと、
口数少ない父から電話口で次々に告げられる情報に、
また自分たちの家も含め生まれ故郷の村の家々が壊れてしまったという事実に、
とてもショックを受けました。その後、電話のラインは途切れ、
限られた状況の中で得られる情報を必死に集める事になりました。
そこから僕は四六時中、甚大な被害を受けた自分の村で、
自分自身がどのように家族や村の人たちの力になれるのかを考え始めました。
多くの団体、組織、個人が地震の被害者を助ける為に、
世界中の街角で寄付を募ったり、お金や物資を集めている状況を見聞きしました。
しかし、自分自身が自分の村の再建をするという目的に目を向けると、
一体どのような状況で、何が本当のサポートになるのかを、
自らが理解しないまま、彼らと同じ方法を取るには全く自信がありませんでした。
何より、自分の中で、自分の村に於いてはそれが確かな方法であるという確信がありませんでした。
そこで自らの仕事の予定を調整し、僕は1回目の地震から約1カ月後の5月末、
ネパールの生まれ故郷の村に帰って様子を見に行くことを決めました。
生まれ故郷の村は、瓦礫の山と化していました。
かろうじて建ち残っていた家々も見受けられたものの、
住むことができないほどに被害が出ていました。
僕が帰国した時点でも、体感できる余震がかなり多く発生していると言う状況でした。
人々は愛しい人を亡くし、財産を亡くし、
それでも簡易テントを家族や隣組で分け合い、
たくましく生活を送っていました。
しかしそれぞれの家々において、財産である家畜、またその小屋、
更には食料や収穫物を保管しておく小屋の屋根にも被害は見られました。
村のみんなが住む家を失い、テントや簡易的に建てた住居で寝ていましたが、
雨季の大雨や土砂がまた、せっかく建てたそれらを押し流してしまう恐れも心配されています。
僕の滞在中にも、地震で緩んだ地盤から土砂崩れの可能性が懸念されるような大雨の夜に
大きな余震が起こり、降りしきる雨の中の非難を余儀なくされました。
この国では80年前の大地震以来、誰もこんな大規模な災害を経験したことがありませんし、
地震の後には余震が起こるという事はおろか、
次に何が起こるのかという事に考えを巡らせる事は多くの人が出来る事ではありませんでした。
これらの状況を見て、又生まれ故郷の村の人たちのライフスタイルへの理解から、
今もっともサムンドラデヴィ村6区に暮らす彼らが必要と感じているのは、
地震によって失われた「自分たちの住む家」を再び「自分たちの手で」、
建て直す事だと分かりました。
食べ物は問題なく、足りている。
自分たちの田畑に植えて育つものなら何でも美味しく頂けます。そしてまた、
これまでもそうして来たように、これからも又自分たちにより栽培して
食べて行くことは出来るのです。しかし眠る家、
そして食べる為に収穫した食べ物を保管し、
風雨から守る屋根のある小屋は必要です。
どの国の人たちに取ってもそうである様に、
ネパールの僕たちにとっても家と言うのは人生を通しての大きな財産、
また多くの人が人生で何度も建てるものではありません。
しかし今回は、その家を再度建て直さざるを得ない状況なのです。
特に多くの仕事をこなす女性やお年寄りにとって、大雨の降る雨季やとても暑い夏、
また凍るような冬にテントという仮住まいに住み続ける事は本当に酷です。
ネパール滞在中も、何をどうすれば、
（例えば何の資材が最適で、どのようなアイデアが生きて、どういった努力が必要なのか？）
自分の村の人たちを助け、村の再建に尽力できるのかを考え続けていました。
ネパールでは家を建てる際、主な資材として木材が多く使われています。
（特に地震以降は倒壊の恐れの高いレンガから木材へと移行）
サムンドラデヴィ6区では、普段から生活に必要な木材や薪などは、
自分たちで所有・管理している森の木、もしくはそれを持たない人たちは、
隣組から買う、借りるなどして揃えられてきました。木はこの様に準備できますが、
いつも最も大変なのはその木を、屋根に、窓に、扉に、柱に変えること、
つまり家の再建に必要不可欠な木を切断して木材にする作業ですが、
今もこの村では全てが手作業で行われています。
一軒の家を建てることも気の遠くなりそうな作業ですが、
約500軒という家屋を建て直さなければならない、
またその分の木材を用意しなければならない地震後の今は、
本当に異例の状況です。そこで僕たちはSano Tino Life Designとして、
「木材切断機の購入」という選択に至ります。
村の皆が「自分たちの力で」家を建て、村を再建して行く事を可能にしたい。
しかし、木材切断機を使用せずに手作業を続けた場合、かかる時間と労力は計り知れませんし、
気の遠くなるような作業であり、現実的でない事は想像に易いことです。
家は彼ら自身の手によって建てられます。彼らにはこれまでも厳しい環境の村で生きる中で
自然と身に付けて来たサバイバル能力、工夫をして生きる力があります。
今回の様に、テントや簡易的な住まいも自分たちで建てることができます。
しかし、手作業で木から木材を切り続ける替りに、その過程を何とか、
せめて現実的なレベルにまで簡易化するという事に、
差し伸べる手があってもいいのではないだろうか。
Sano Tino Life Designでは、
まず初回仕入れ分の売り上げ(2015年8月販売開始分）を、
「木材切断機の購入」に充てることで、村の人たちが自分たちの家を再建して、
また日々の生活を心配なく送れる手助けをする、
また、村や地域は違えど、同じネパールの人達の手によって生み出された
魅力的な商品を仕入れ販売する事で、
結果的にわずかではありながら経済面での復興に携わることを決めました。
それから最後に、ネパールで作られた″サノティノ”が、
皆さまの生活に彩を添えることを願って。

On Saturday 25 April a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake
struck Nepal.
It severely shook the lives of at least 8 million people and left many
homeless.
Nepal’s major cities,including the capital Kathmandu,
have been badly damaged and rural areas near the epicenter
have been
completely cut off by avalanches.
Another
7.3 magnitude earthquake rocks Nepal on 12 May.
1,061 people had been reported
killed and 1,341 injured in Nuwakot
as a result of the earthquake. 57,943
buildings were destroyed
in the earthquake and 15,000 are partly damaged only
in Nuwakot.

Nuwakot is about 100km (about 60 miles) northwest of capital Kathmandu.

12th May massive earthquake annihilated my entire village, including our home.
I was in Ocean city San Diego for my business from Japan,
during 25th April massive earthquake in Nepal
and wake up in the middle of the night from the phone call back from home.
I was very shocked with the news and the information from my father
who is a basically man of few words ;everybody's house has turned into piles of rubble,
some children in village died under the rubble,
and many injured people were treated in open ground.
I was trying to get any information from available resources.
and I came up to know that our house has also down by 12th May,
7.3 magnitude earthquakes simultaneously.
There, I was thinking all day and night
about how I can support family and earthquake victims
in Nepal an my hometown back in Nepal.
I saw much international rescue and aid, NGO,
local support and people collecting money in every street
and station in many countries to support the victims.
But I was not sure whether I wanted to do the same way
without understanding what would be the true help to rebuild our village.
I came to the point after a month from the first earthquake
to pull back myself from the business and return back to hometown in May.
The town and village where I was grown up have turned into rubble.
I saw houses which were standing are also badly damage,
People have lost their loves one and big property losses.
Even after months of the earthquake, I experienced myself many aftershocks,
People were still living in tents sharing the rooms with family and neighbor.
Everybody is homeless and some nights we had to evacuate in the rain,
in the middle of the night with the threat of landslide.
None has ever experienced such an earthquake in the country except 80 years ago
nor does anybody have idea what is happening and when it will be ending.
Villagers have lost their houses, a cowshed,
and shelter for goats and even barely any roofs for storing their harvest.
Monsoon rain is coming and people are afraid of landslide and flood
that may sweep away their temporary shelter as well.
Seeing that entire situation and understanding local lifestyle.
Re building houses would be one of the most important
and where people need most help.
Villagers can survive by eating whatever they can found
in their rice field and crop again.
But they need a house to sleep and store their harvest.
There I have been thinking what and how can I contribute to re build our village,
what materials, idea, effort would help everybody.
Like every other country,
houses are for life time and not many people can build many houses in their lifetime.
But our villager needs to rebuild one.
Women who have many things to do and senior people
cannot take a shelter in tent in heavy rain,
hot summer and freezing winter.
Soon after going details on materials and construction trend,
wood is commonly used in Nepalese house.
People still got their own forest or even they may borrow some trees with
the neighbor
but turning trees into roofs or windows and door or pillar for the house
is big
hurdles and it took years my manual work.
Here I came to conclusion that we want to buy a wood cutting machine
for
rebuilding more than 500 collapsed houses.
We dream to see everybody will have a better and beautiful house within
next half year.
Without wood and cutting by machine would not be
possible as manual works need
a lot of time and effort.
We want to see villagers rebuild their house by themselves.
Villagers got great surviving skills by birth
but one could hardly think of
efficient way to re build the houses.
At the end we really hope our Sano Tino support will helps
to bring
back villagers to their home
through donating the profit of the first phase
(products profit released on Aug, 2015).
And we hope Sano Tino stuffs made in Nepal will helps to design your life with
more color.
